Sally Lowry Baldwin

In memoriam

Sally Lowry Baldwin, pictured above with her family in 2005, was a former chair of the Lowry Park Zoo Association, formed in 1982 to raise awareness and promote a public-private parnership to fund renovation of the Zoo in Lowry Park. Lowry Park was named in honor of Mrs. Baldwin's grandfather, Dr. Sumter L. Lowry, a city commissioner instrumental in purchasing the property for a public park in Tampa in 1918.

The Zoo Association in 1988 became the Lowry Park Zoological Society, a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to the managing and ongoing development of Lowry Park Zoo on the city-owned property. Mrs. Baldwin was founding chair of both the Lowry Park Zoological Society and the Lowry Park Zoo Endowment Foundation.

A third-generation Tampan, Mrs. Baldwin spent her adult life in volunteer service and continued a leadership role in support of Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo and the Lowry Park Zoo Endowment Foundation.

In 2008, Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo named Sally Lowry Baldwin a lifetime honorary trustee of the nonprofit Lowry Park Zoological Society, which operates Lowry Park Zoo. It was only the second time in the Zoo's 25-year history that the designation was awarded. The first was in 1990 to the late Mrs Charles P. (Mason) Lykes. At a reception in her honor in 2008, Mrs. Baldwin was praised for her outstanding contributions and community leadership in support of Lowry Park Zoo, including creating and co-chairing the first annual black-tie gala called Karamu in 1988 (with Mason Lykes), being a strong community supporter of re-opening Lowry Park Zoo in 1988, establishing the Lowry Park Zoo Endowment Foundation, opening the Asian Domain exhibit (one of the first major exhibit areas at the zoo), launching the Next Generation Campaign for capital developments (a successful $20,000,000 campaign that helped to double the size of the Zoo), and working on behalf of the Zoo to encourage private support throughout the community.

A gift to the Lowry Park Zoo Endowment Foundation in memory of Sally Lowry Baldwin is a lasting tribute.
